UAE authorities seek to accelerate construction of tram system in Dubai

The Dubai Roads and Transport Committee (RTA) is ramping up the construction of a tram system under the Al Sufouh Tram project. Currently, construction work is accelerated by 30%, and the completion of the project is expected in 2014.

Infrastructure construction works include tram tracks, power lines through which trams will be charged with energy, bypassing already laid communications - power lines and water supply systems.

The length of the tram tracks will be 14 km along Al Safouh Road, but the initial phase involves the construction of 9.5 km of tracks from the Dubai Marina area to the metro station near the Mall of the Emirates.

In total, it is planned to open 19 tram stops, the construction of 9 of them is included in the first stage of the project. All tram tracks will be located on the same level as the road, with the exception of some sections of the track where the necessary elevations are due to the nature of the terrain. Each train will be 44 meters long and can accommodate about 300 passengers.

For the first time, it is planned to launch 8 trains, and another 17 will begin to carry passengers upon completion of the second stage of the Al Sufouh Tram project. In total, 25 trains will be able to carry a total of up to 5 thousand passengers per hour in each direction.

Tram trains will not be equipped with antennas - all power will be supplied through a ground power cable equipped with a modern automated protection system. It is planned that the train will consist of first-class cars, special cars for women and children, and, of course, standard cars for passengers will also be equipped. In addition, all trains and stations will be equipped so that passengers with disabilities can easily use this mode of transport.
