Arab Emirates Revises Counter Terrorism Law

The United Arab Emirates is reviewing the current anti-terrorism law in order to start implementing more effective measures to combat all kinds of threats and “laundering” of money obtained by criminal means. “The law in force today was passed in 2004. Since then, significant changes have been made in international law and methods of combating organized crime and terrorism have been revised,” said Dr. Abdulrahim Al Avadi, Chairman of the National Counter-Terrorism Committee and Assistant Minister UAE Foreign Affairs on legal issues. “Laws in the UAE must comply with international obligations to successfully deal with criminal phenomena that are increasing every day.”

The National Counter-Terrorism Committee was established in 2001 based on a decision by the UAE Cabinet of Ministers. His mandate includes ongoing joint work and coordinated activities with a number of international organizations, the implementation of counter-terrorism resolutions of international bodies such as the UN Security Council, the review and addition of anti-terrorism legislation, and the issuance of recommendations on how this legislation can be supplemented the best way. To date, the United Arab Emirates has already signed 13 international counter-terrorism agreements.
