United Arab Emirates toughens responsibility for cybercrime.
UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan issued a new decree amending the law on cybercrime in the country.
Article No. 26 provides for punishment in the form of imprisonment of 10-25 years and a fine of 2-4 million dirhams ($ US 544.5 - $ 1 million) for anyone who maintains sites or publishes information in the interests of terrorist groups.
The article also indicates a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years, and a fine in the amount of from 500 thousand dirhams to a million dirhams ($ US 136 thousand - $ US 272 thousand) in relation to persons managing sites that were created with the aim of inciting hatred.
Persons who violate the law for the first time, by a court decision, can be placed under electronic surveillance. They will be prohibited from using the means of access to information systems for a period not exceeding the statutory maximum period.
Article 28 provides for the punishment of temporary imprisonment and a fine not exceeding one million dirhams for the creation of a website whose contents may jeopardize national security or threaten any member of the judicial system.
Article 42 states that a court may decide to deport a foreigner convicted of any of these crimes.
